WHAT WE DO
Our Veteran's Group provides Full Military Funeral Honors for area veterans, including folding and presenting the burial flag, the firing of seven M1 Garand rifles and playing “live” taps near the end the funeral service.
Many times we coordinate with the associated military branch funeral team. When working with the military, their team will fold and present the burial flag.
We also post and/or present Colors, sometimes with Service Flags at local schools, Veterans functions and parades, and can provide Flag Etiquette programs at elementary schools.
VOLUNTEER
Joining the Honor Guard offers a chance to serve with distinction by honoring our fallen local veterans, providing comfort to bereaved families, and representing your service branch with pride. This rewarding experience also offers a sense of purpose and lifelong camaraderie. Within our group we have retired (from work) veterans who perform the bulk of our services, and we also have veterans still in the workplace who can join the team for evening and/or weekend services and scheduled events.
We are always looking for good men and women to join us in providing these services. If you're interested in what we do please email us at Volunteer@GreenwoodHonorGuard.org for more information.
REQUIREMENTS
To join our Honor Guard, you must be a member or become a member of the Greenwood American Legion Post 252 and/or the Greenwood or the New Whiteland Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). These Posts sanction our group allowing us to operate. You will not be required to attend post meetings, etc. after becoming a post member.
If you are not yet a post member, joining is easy. You will need a copy of your DD-214 (or equivalent) and pay the first year's membership dues. Go to the "Our Posts" page to find links to the posts we represent.
Often in coordination with the deceased's military branch, we fire seven M1 Garand rifles, fold and present the burial flag, and play “live” taps near the end the funeral service.
A U.S. military funeral typically includes a three-volley salute, using 3 to 7 rifles firing three rounds of blanks in unison. Our team on most occasions is able to provide a 7-man rife team. This totals 21 rounds (3 volleys, 7 rifles) fired in honor of the deceased, extending a long and solemn tradition.
We also provide Color Guard duties, such as leading the annual Freedom Festival Parade in late June.
We often post Colors with two-armed guards at the start of concerts, social events and school events during the year.
Our group posted this flag at a grade school honoring veterans on veteran's day. We later retrieved the flag during the closing ceremonies.
